A Level

A level은 무엇인가?

영국의 고등학교 과정인 A level은 학생의 희망 전공과 관련된 과목으로 3과목 이상을 선택하며 2년 과정이다. 영국 뿐만 아니라 유럽권 대학과 싱가폴, 홍콩, 말레이시아, 호주, 한국에서도 인정받은 교육과정이다. 첫해 1학년을 AS라 부르며, 둘재 해는 A2라 한다. 2년을 합쳐 A level이라고 부른다. A level 2학년 말에  A level 시험을 치루고 결과는 8월 15일 경에 발표된다.  

 

전공에 따른 추천과목

영국은 예체능 전공을 제외하고 Mathematics에 대한 비중이 높다.  

상경계열 : Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics, History

공학계열 : Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology

의대/약대 : Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology

법학 : English, Maths, Further Maths, History, Physics

 

A level 성공 요건

한국교육과정의 시험 형태는 4-5지 선다형 문제지만, 영국의 A level은 Essay를 기반으로 하는 시험형태이기 때문에 Writing Skill이 관건이다. 한국에서만 계속 공부해온 학생이라면 입학 전까지 IELTS 5.5이상은 취득하는 것이 좋다. 만약 영어 실력이 부족하다면 사전에 어학연수나 Pre프로그램과 같은 준비코스를 수강하는 것이 좋다. 어설픈 영어 실력은 A level 성공에 방해가 된다.

Mathematics :

Biology :

Biological molecules, Cells, Organisms exchange substances with their environment

Chemistry :

organic chemistry, such as the alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and haloalkanes and organic synthesis reactions. And, the Inorganic/physical chemistry: covering topics including moles, bonding and structure, redox reactions and acids and bases, energy changes, reversible reactions and equilibria, and rates of reaction.

 

Physics :

Radiation and Quantum Phenomena Particles, Mechanics, Current Electricity, Elastic Properties of Solids and Waves. The second year of A Level covers a wide range of topics including: Gravitational, Electric and Magnetic Fields, Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Instability as well as an option, presently Astrophysics.

 

Art(Fine Art) :

a diverse range of techniques; building on your existing skills and adding new approaches to creating artworks. In Year 12 you will be involved in producing an exploratory portfolio, focusing on developing your creative and project management skills through observational drawing and painting, practical workshops, constructive criticism and tutorials.

 

Business :

Marketing and People, Marketing Mix and Strategy, Entrepreneurs and Leaders, Meeting Customers' Needs. Managing People, Managing Business Activities, Raising Finance, Managing Finance, Resource Management, External Influences, Business Decisions and Strategy, Global Business

 

Computer Science :

The first year of the A level course concentrates on developing these problem solving approaches and the practical skills of programming. It also gives you an insight into how the computer works, from the inner workings of the microprocessor to memory, storage, operating systems, databases and networks.

In the second year will deepen your understanding by introducing you to a range of programming languages and techniques, as well as exploring current technology developments such as Cloud computing, functional computing and big data. You will also put your skills to the test by producing a programming project which accounts for 20% of your overall marks.

 

Economics :

Markets, consumers and firms, The wider economic environment, The global economy, Making markets work

 

Geography :

graphicacy, cartography, literacy and numeracy. Topics include: Water and carbon cycles

Hazards, Glacial systems and landscapes, Global systems and global governance, Changing places

Contemporary urban environments.

 

Geology :

Geological Investigations, Geological Principles and Processes, Geological Applications

 

History :

The modern history course is divided into four units. Unit 1 delves into the history of Britain from the 1900-1951. This unit focuses on social and political change in Britain through the twentieth century, starting with a detailed study of changes in Britain before and during the First World War. Looking at women’s suffrage and examining how Britain responded to the challenges of decline between the wars and the impact of World War Two. The unit ends with a study of the Labour government from 1945-51, which introduced the modern welfare state.

Unit 2 covers the American Revolution from 1740-1796 and looks at the reasons for and the process of the American Revolution, which resulted in the formation of the modern United States in the late eighteenth century. Unit 3 covers Russia and its Rulers from 1855-1964. This in depth study of an extended period of Russian history, focusing on the way Russia responded to the challenges of enormous political and economic change, war and modernisation, particularly the similarities and differences between the ways late Imperial Russia and Communist Russia responded to these challenges. Finally, unit 4 is an independent research essay from a selection of titles offered to you.

 

Phychology :

Year 1: Topics studied include: memory, attachment, biopsychology, abnormality, social influence plus a unit looking at the research techniques psychologists use to investigate behaviour.

Year 2: Further topics are studied including relationships, aggression and stress. You will also be required to discuss issues and debates in psychology. In addition you will develop your understanding of biopsychology and use your statistical knowledge to analyse data.

 

Media :

Year 1: Learners study a range of media forms in terms of a theoretical framework which consists of media language, representation, media industries and audiences. The following forms are studied in depth through applying all areas of the framework: newspapers, magazines, television, online, social and participatory media. Advertising and marketing, film, music video, radio and video games are also studied. The coursework unit includes an individual media production based on two forms in response to a choice of briefs set by the exam board.

Year 2: Learners build on their knowledge gained from Year 1 developing advanced approaches, to inform and support their analysis of media products and processes. The second year includes a study of media forms and products in depth including: television in the global age, magazines, mainstream and alternative media and media in the online age. The coursework unit includes an individual cross-media production based on two forms in response to a choice of briefs set by the exam board.

 

Sociology :

In the first year you will study: Education, Research method, Families and households

In the second year of the A Level you will broaden your understanding of society. You will study:

Crime and deviance, Theory and methods, Beliefs in society
